As the early summer breeze blows gently, learning is an endless journey.

From April 28 to May 3, 2026, the 【Internationally Certified】 Mulligan Concept A+B Course (Hangzhou), hosted by Jianheng Academy, concluded successfully.

Over six days of systematic training, more than 30 rehabilitation practitioners from all over the country gathered. Under the guidance of Instructor Li Hongtu, the only direct disciple of Master Brian Mulligan in mainland China, they conducted in-depth study of this world-leading manual therapy technique, which features pain-free application and immediate results.

01 Course Highlights

1、Taught by an officially trained international instructor: Delivered by Dr. Li Hongtu, the only MCTA international instructor in mainland China, presenting the core philosophies and technical system of Master Brian Mulligan in their authentic form.

2、The PILL Principle runs throughout the course: Emphasising "pain-free treatment, immediate changes and long-lasting effects". Every participant can experience the sense of achievement from witnessing instant improvements in patients when the techniques are applied correctly.

3、Systematic coverage of Modules A and B: Learn dynamic mobilisation techniques for all major joints throughout the body, from the cervical spine to the toes, including theory and taping applications.

4、Extensive hands-on practice with immediate corrections: Daily practical training of clinical manual therapy techniques, with hands-on guidance from Dr. Li to ensure proper technique and clear clinical reasoning.

5、Evidence-based foundation: The techniques are explained with reference to hundreds of global research papers, clarifying their scientific rationale so that all treatments are evidence-based.

02 Participant Gains

Immediate clinical application techniques: These can be directly applied to common musculoskeletal conditions including cervicogenic dizziness, subacromial impingement, tennis elbow, lumbar disc herniation and knee osteoarthritis after returning to clinical practice.

A renewed therapeutic mindset: Understand the treatment logic of applying techniques in weight-bearing positions combined with the patient’s active movement, breaking through the limitations of traditional passive mobilisation.

Official international certification: Completion of Modules A and B leads to a formal certificate, laying the groundwork for subsequent CMP (Certified Mulligan Practitioner) accreditation.

Refined manual skills & clinical correction: Through extensive peer practice and instructor feedback, participants correct subtle flaws in previous techniques, enabling safer and more precise treatment.

03 Course Highlights Review

Unlike traditional joint mobilisation techniques, the Mulligan Concept emphasises pain-free active movement in functional weight-bearing positions, delivering more immediate and long-lasting results. It allows sustained gliding treatment while patients perform provocative movements, making it highly practical.

Combining the benefits of passive joint mobilisation with voluntary active movement, it integrates multidisciplinary knowledge including sports medicine and osteopathy. Centered on the PILL principle (Pain-free, Immediate effect, Long-lasting results), it uses a combined approach of therapist-assisted passive techniques and patient active movement to restore normal joint gliding, reduce pain, improve joint range of motion, and address reduced joint strength. It is especially suitable for a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders, featuring broad clinical application and a high safety profile.

Module A: Cervical Spine, Thoracic Spine & Upper Extremity Joints (Day 1-3)

Core Techniques: NAGS, Reverse NAGS, SNAGSTreatment planes, four core principles, manipulation sequences, clinical assessment and contraindications
Cervical Spine: Management of cervicogenic dizziness, cervical mobilisation combined with upper limb functional movement
Shoulder Region: Dynamic mobilisation of the glenohumeral joint, scapula and scapulothoracic articulation
Elbow, Wrist & Hand: Tennis elbow, radioulnar joint, carpometacarpal joints, interphalangeal joints, MCP joints and long bone mobilisation
Thoracic Spine & Ribs: Dynamic mobilisation of thoracic spinal joints and rib mobilisation
Feature: Immediate assessment and treatment integrated with functional movement

Module A equips participants with efficient strategies for resolving common cervical spine and upper extremity complaints. Conditions such as inability to raise the arm can often be corrected with just one proper MWM technique, enabling pain-free overhead movement.

Module B: Lumbar Spine, Sacroiliac Joint & Lower Extremity Joints (Day 4-6)

Lumbar Spine: SNAGS dynamic mobilisation, lumbar extension mobilisation, lumbar self-mobilisation, mobilisation with straight leg raise
Sacroiliac Joint & Hip: Sacroiliac joint mobilisation, dynamic hip mobilisation and traction techniques, straight leg raise mobilisation
Knee Joint: Dynamic mobilisation, Mulligan compression technique, Mulligan knee taping technique
Ankle & Foot: Dynamic mobilisation of the ankle, talocalcaneal joint, subtalar joint, forefoot joints and toe joints
Signature Techniques: Dynamic foot mobilisation taping, metacarpal joint mobilisation (adapted for lower extremity application)

Module B addresses common clinical problems affecting the lumbar spine, hip, knee, ankle and foot. For prevalent conditions including lumbar disc herniation, knee osteoarthritis and chronic ankle sprains, many participants reported applying the techniques the very next day after the course.

04 Participant Feedback

Participants all commented that Instructor Li Hongtu delivered a highly practical course. The hands-on teaching approach helped them quickly master the core manual techniques, effectively resolving the joint mobilisation challenges they had encountered in clinical practice.

Using SNAGS for restricted cervical spine extension resulted in immediate improvement in the patient’s range of motion. This instant response completely convinced me of the effectiveness of MWM.

"Dr. Li has extensive experience. He thoroughly explains the reasoning behind every technique and shares clinical cases openly, which is incredibly valuable."

"I used to think mobilisation techniques required slow, gradual manipulation. The Mulligan Concept shows me the power of speed and precision. Best of all, the treatment is pain-free, so patients have excellent compliance."

04 Conclusion

This course strictly follows international certification standards. Participants will receive a corresponding official certificate upon completing a single module. After finishing Modules A, B and C, they are eligible to sit the CMP (Certified Mulligan Practitioner) exam. Upon passing, they will obtain an internationally verifiable Mulligan manual therapy practitioner certification, providing solid support for participants’ professional development.

Though the six-day course has concluded, the real clinical practice journey has only just begun.

We sincerely thank Dr. Li Hongtu for his comprehensive teaching, and all participants for their dedication and trust.

Upholding the philosophy that "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime", Jianheng Academy will continue to introduce high-quality internationally certified courses, supporting every therapist to advance steadily and further in their professional career.

We look forward to meeting you again at our next event.
